More Reasons to Love Barking Dog

by anna sites

Looking for a new place to enjoy your morning java, hear some smooth local music or just chill out for a bit? In the heart of Downtown Beaumont lies your new favorite caffeine cafĂ©: The Barking Dog coffee lounge at 493 Pearl Street. Inside Joey and Tanya Crawford’s unassuming establishment resides an eclectic mix of contemporary art and vintage furniture, small beaded chandeliers and track lighting. Each wall is awash with a different bright hue and the faux fireplace is flanked by bookshelves containing many tomes from Rudyard Kipling to the King James Bible, aviation manuals to 1960 Cliff‘s Notes.

Specializing in Fair Trade and organic coffee blends, everything made in-house is completely organic with as many local ingredients as possible. Along with delicious specialty drinks, they also offer paninis, soups, cakes, muffins, cookies and more. The mocha latte I had while visiting was a rich, creamy treat and I think the cozy surroundings made it taste even better.

At the Barking Dog they aren’t just serving up some of the best coffee around, they also offer a taste of local culture to go with that scone. Prominently adorning the walls are creative and interesting pieces by local artists. This month’s artist is Summer Lydic, while next month Tiger Landry’s works will be featured. Decided you just can’t live without your newfound favorite masterpiece? Then you’re in luck- the art is usually for sale. If the SETX music scene is more your thing, come most Friday or Saturday nights to hear a local band. The Dog has become such a hub for local talent that Barely Blind, a house favorite, recently recorded their live album there. If you’re feeling brave, open mic night is every Tuesday. For a little something different, this Saturday will be the Spins N’ Needles fashion show. To stay in the loop, checkout their Myspace for events schedules and a sampling of the music you’ll hear. When asked to describe the lounge, barista Kyle Kirkland smiled and said “much needed”. The area was in need of an organic, home town coffee shop and that’s just what the Crawfords created. In this “Coldplay-esque“, bohemian-urban-chic environment it’s hard not to relax, which is just what the owners want. Make yourself at home, have some lunch, play a board game and have fun. Come. Sit. Stay. Enjoy.
