Bringing Normalcy Back with Bugs?
By AMSET'S Melissa Tilley
The Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) has just the thing to lift Southeast Texans’ spirits and kick off Halloween festivities – BUGS! Back by popular demand is “Eat a Bug!” Family Arts Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, where AMSET will be serving up that creepy, crawly delicacy that has come to be a Southeast Texas favorite – fried crickets – as well as offering a variety of exciting art activities and entertainment, all for FREE.
“‘Eat a Bug!’ Family Arts Day is going to be a great time for kids and their families to come enjoy some FREE, family-oriented fun and festivities to celebrate many things including Halloween, recovery from Hurricane Ike and the artwork of Howard Sherman,” said AMSET Assistant Curator of Education Andy Gardner. “And of course, bugs will be in abundance for all the brave tasters.”
For the annual Family Arts Day that has fondly come to be known as “Eat a Bug Day” at AMSET, the main event will be the daring, adventurous tasting of bugs cooked by the “Bugsperts” themselves – Bill Clark Pest Control. Parents are encouraged to bring their most finicky eater to join the ever-growing club of bug-eaters young and old. If once-live insects are not part of some diets, participants can find tasty alternatives by making edible spiders from marshmallows and pretzels.
Art activities planned for the day include making insect antennae, masks, decorating pumpkin cookies, and much more. Children can also make POW! action paintings and SPLAT! spin art to reflect the artwork of painter and former cartoonist Howard Sherman.
Also keeping with the harrowing holiday theme, AMSET will resurrect another popular activity for children – decorating sugar skulls. These skulls are traditionally used as part of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a Latin American holiday celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2.
To further usher in Halloween, children are encouraged to wear costumes to Family Arts Day, and participate in the costume contest that will be judged at noon. Live entertainment will also be provided by Chinese lion dancers.
This program is made possible in part by Memorial Hermann Baptist Beaumont Hospital, Beaumont Junior Forum (In-Kind), Coburn Supply, Dorothy Anne & C.W. Conn Fund of Communities Foundation of Southeast Texas, Efficient Systems AC & Heat, ExxonMobil, Mrs. Lucy Fanette , Mary Jo Ford, Mildred Hall, H-E-B, LaBiche Architectural Group, MobilOil Federal Credit Union, Sam’s Club and SETEX Construction.
Through unique collections, exhibitions, public programs and outreach in the visual arts, the mission of the Art Museum of Southeast Texas is to provide education, inspiration and creative vision throughout Southeast Texas.
