Stop & Prune the Roses

The McFaddin-Ward House Museum will host its Annual Rose Pruning Workshop Saturday, February 9, from 10:00 a.m. until noon, in its rose garden. The clinic is open to the public and free, and will start at the North Street gate behind the McFaddin-Ward House, between Third and Fourth Streets.

Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Felix McFarland will lead the hands-on session with the assistance of The Golden Triangle Rose Society members. In the Rose Pruning Workshop, McFarland will show the proper ways to prune roses and give advice on rose care. A workshop bonus will allow the attendees to take home the rose cuttings.

Eight years as the McFaddin-Ward House’s Buildings and Grounds Supervisor, McFarland has hosted the rose clinic for seven years. He and his work team tend 80 rose plants in the home’s formal gardens. The Museum presents 40,000 square feet of lawn and another 20,000 square feet of flower bed area.

His best rose tip is to choose a good rose variety. “There are too many beautiful roses out there for you to waste your time with ones that are too hard to care for,” said McFarland. His favorite rose?  “The Mr. Lincoln is my favorite because it is very rewarding. A nice red rose with a lovely scent and is disease resistant.”

People are encouraged to park at the Museum’s visitor center, located at Calder Avenue and Third Street, and walk to the North Street gate. The museum will be open for tours that day and reservations are a must and can be made by calling 409-832-2134.
