The Smiles Behind Sylvan

Sylvan Learning Centers of Beaumont and Nederland has been serving the Golden Triangle for over 22 years and has been a customer of Kirksey’s for most of that time. With the expansion to the Nederland area in 1995, the center normally employs 52 employees. As part of a network of over 1,150 centers in the U.S. and Canada serving over 170,000 students per month, the local operation has become the most decorated award winning center in the system…winning the President’s Award and the first Hall of Fame Award.

Local operators Claude and Ruthie Guidroz maintain that their focus is “to have a real live person answer the phone from 8am to 8 pm and to treat each and every situation as though you were discussing your own child!” Sylvan begins by assessing the student’s strengths and liabilities and recommending a plan of action to address the specific needs. “When you go to a tutor, your child is thrown a life preserver…when you come to Sylvan, we teach your child to swim,’ says Mr. Guidroz. “ We hire caring, loving, instructors, who give each student individualized attention, in a very positive and affirming environment specifically designed to meet you’re their unique needs. We meet with parents monthly to discuss each student’s progress and we retest at no charge every 36-40 hours to evaluate gains.”

Typically students are progressing at a rate 1 to 2 years of gain every 4 to 6 months Programs range from SAT prep to math, algebra, reading and study skills and are all specifically designed based on each families goals. Sylvan provides affordable payment options which can allow students to attend for as little as $135 per month.

“Up to 80% of what kids learn in the school year can be lost during the summer”, says Mr. G (as the student’s call him). “Your student can be making gains while others sit idle during the summer.” Mr. Guidroz went on to say, “we have gone from number one in the world in mathematics in the last 20 years to number 24…one grandmother recently brought her granddaughter to me and said…I hope you can do for my granddaughter what you did for my son 20 years ago…he hated math, but after a year at Sylvan, he is now a NASA engineer!”
